How to Use Ten-Frames: A Simple Guide for Teachers & Parents
Ten-frames are powerful visual tools to teach counting, addition, subtraction, and number sense. Here’s how to use them effectively with your free printable templates:
1. Basic Counting (Pre-K to Kindergarten)
Activity: Place counters (dots, coins, buttons) in the ten-frame one by one.
Goal: Help kids visualize numbers 1–10.
Example: For the number 5, fill 5 squares. Emphasize that 5 is “half full.”
2. Addition & Subtraction (Kindergarten to 1st Grade)
Addition: Start with a number (e.g., 3 counters), then add more (e.g., 2 counters) to solve 3 + 2 = 5.
Subtraction: Fill all 10 squares, then remove some (e.g., take away 4 to solve 10 – 4 = 6).
3. Number Bonds & Making 10
Activity: Use two colors of counters. Ask, “How many more to make 10?”
Example: Place 7 red counters, then add 3 blue counters to show 7 + 3 = 10.
4. Comparing Numbers
Game: Print two ten-frames. Have kids compare which has more/less (e.g., 6 vs. 9).
5. Advanced Skills (1st–2nd Grade)
Place Value: Use double ten-frames for numbers 11–20.
Word Problems: “There are 4 apples. Add 6 more. How many now?”
