Sorting Objects by Properties – Science Lesson for Kindergarten
Why Do We Sort Things?
Sorting means putting things in groups based on how they are alike or different.
We sort objects by their properties , like:
- hardness
- texture (smooth or rough)
- weight (heavy or light)
- flexibility (bendy or stiff)
This helps us understand how things are similar or different.
Example: Sorting by Texture
Imagine you have 4 objects:
- A wooden block – hard and rough
- A sponge – soft and flexible
- A metal spoon – hard and smooth
- A cotton ball – soft and light
You could sort them into two groups:
- Soft : sponge, cotton ball
- Hard : wooden block, metal spoon
Or by texture:
- Smooth : metal spoon, cotton ball
- Rough : wooden block, sponge
